Recognizing the Signs of Addiction
Do you think someone you love might be suffering from a drug or alcohol addiction?
Here are some of the warning signs of substance abuse.
Addiction causes extremes.
Watch for: hyperactivity, restlessness, incredible fatigue, paranoia, irritability, slurred speech, lack of coordination, withdrawal, mania and/or poor judgment.
Addiction is expensive.
Watch for: perpetually low funds, creditors and collection calls, bounced checks.
Addiction is exhausting.
Watch for: poor attendance at school or work, chronic tardiness, daytime sleepiness, schedule changes.
Addiction can get ugly.
Watch for: dry, itchy skin, fully dilated pupils, poor hygiene, alcohol on the breath, and/or blood-shot eyes.
Addiction is consuming.
Watch for: preoccupation with alcohol-centered events, making plans around alcohol, failure to attend “dry” gatherings, and/or drinking before going out at night.
Addiction loves company.
Watch for: new friends who drink, dismissal of old friends who don’t, and/or risky behavior/activities.
While this list includes some common indicators of abuse, these signs alone are not a diagnosis of addiction. They may also be symptoms of serious or undiagnosed health problems. Talk to a professional about your observations to determine if your loved one has a substance abuse problem.
